ED- Goodwin writing frame analysis

Jamie XX- loud places
  • This song is in the genre of electronica/ future garage/ trip hop, the costumes of the characters are all in black this is typical of the genre and the use of skateboard fits in with the genre of music. The colours in this are a mixture of very bright (confetti) and dull streets and dark lighting. this helps to amplify the light colours which are typical of the electronica and future garage genre. The post production slow mo is very typical in the trip hop genre this is because it helps to emphasis the chilled out mood of the slow moving electronic music. The slow cutting rate that picks up towards the chorus helps to show the audience when the pace of the music is building up, the scenes are also cut with the beat and sometimes are cut into a black screen. The sets of a skate park and of the streets of London are very typical of the genre this is because often electronica is assosiated with urban locations and lots of people.
  • Goodwin discussed the relationship between lyrics and visuals this is becuase lots of music video's will either amplify, illistrate or be abstract to the music. In this video we are able to see that the visuals amplify the lyrics this is because the lyrics are clearly about a girl and her partner and in the video we are able to see a girl and her partner on skateboards. However it is not showing the couple going out or alone as the lyrics suggest 'ecsatcy' and being alone at some points when the partner is not around.
  • There is a strong link between music and visuals this is because there is a slow tempo of music and a sad dull mood which fits in with the dark lighting and slow mo used therefore this is conventional to Goodwin's theory.
  • There is no direct notion of looking this is because the artists or the girl do not look diretly into the camera they look past the camera and so are not giving us an insight into their lives this is contraversial to what Goodwin's conventions.
  • According to Goodwin's theory music video's are voyeursitic this means that there would be sexual influences in the music video however in this music video there is not this as both people in the video are fully clothed and not showing signs of sexuality. This therefore contradicts what Goodwin says about music video'sbeing voyeuristic.
  • Music video's often have interexternal influences for this video it would be the media and skateboarding as skateboarding is a growingly popular and more fasionable sport that people are taking up and currently brands associated with skateboarding are on social media.
  • This video comforms to the stereotype this is because it supports lots of the points that Goodwin makes that constitute his theory, we are able to see lots of characteristics which Goodwin points out displayed however there is also lots of points where the video doesnt follow the rules of Goodwins theory for example the notion of looking we do not see examples in the video as the characters do not look directly at the camera.

  1. Well done Elliot, most of your interpretation of Goodwins theory is accurate apart from voyeurism. You should put three images into this post to make it more visual -well done
